How to apply bronzer

Are you tired of pale, wintry skin? For a warm, sunkissed glow that leaves your skin looking radiant, bronzer is the perfect addition to your morning routine. But beware, bronzer is easy to mess up, as many wounded souls can attest to – too much, and you can end up looking orange, weathered, and way too shimmery! Not a good look, but something that is pretty simple to avoid if you know how to put on bronzer properly. Find out more about where to apply bronzer for that sunny, straight-outta-California look!

Do you apply bronzer before foundation?

Short answer: no. Bronzer always goes on after you apply face makeup, i.e., foundationconcealer, and powder. So, where does bronzer come into your makeup routine? Simple. Put bronzer on before blush or highlighter. If you don’t do that, it’ll make your bronzer appear muddy, which definitely isn’t part of the natural, glowy look you should be trying to achieve!

What type of brush should you use?

To get that perfect glow, you need the right tools for the job. When you’ve got a makeup bag that’s already overflowing with brushes and palettes, we know that adding another brush into the mix probably isn’t the first thing on your agenda, but trust us, a dedicated bronzing brush can work wonders. So, if you’re learning how to apply bronzer, what sort of brush should you get? Well, that depends on how you want your makeup to look. If you want a light, all-over glow, get a soft, fluffy brush. However, if you’re going for the sculpted, sun-goddess vibe, an angled brush could be the right choice.

Where do you put bronzer?

Want to know where to apply bronzer? There are points of the face that are more natural to bronze, so you don’t want to slather it all over. Instead, think about the areas of your face where the sun naturally hits from above your head – across the top of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and your forehead. Also, go down the side of the neck so that you can connect the face with the body. No-one likes a floating head, after all!
Top tip: Putting bronzer underneath the chin can help make your cheekbones appear wider, making it an excellent technique for anyone longing for high, defined cheekbones.

How to use bronzer: step by step

So, we’ve shown you the basics, but knowing how to put on bronzer is a different matter entirely. Follow our step by step guide on how to use bronzer for a little more information:

1. Firstly, it’s essential to know how to hold your bronzer brush. If you want to use more bronzer, hold the brush closer to the face. However, if you’d prefer a softer application, grip it further down.

2. Next, the age-old question: where to put bronzer? Apply bronzer to the parts of your face we mentioned above (forehead, cheekbones, nose, neck, and chin).

3. Now, it’s time to add a little bit of radiance back into the skin. If you only use bronzer, your skin can lose its natural redness or pinkness and feel very warm, which is something you’ll want to avoid. Using the same brush, sweep blush over the cheekbones and nose.

4. Then, using the highlighting side of the bronzer, take a soft brush and apply it to the top of the cheekbones, forehead, nose, and Cupid’s bow.

5. For the final touch, apply balm (like Maybelline’s Balm and Blush) to the eyelids to make them pop and bring light to the lids. And you’re done! A gorgeous, summer-lit glow, courtesy of Maybelline.
